We live by faith when we make decision that don’t follow popular culture, don’t look like the world, and put us at the end of ridicule. Even the way we pray is an indication of whether we place our faith in God or ourselves. Here we see the perfect example of one who think he is justified by his own righteousness, and the one who lives by faith in God, knowing that his righteousness could never, ever be enough. The comparison of one who lives by faith versus the self-righteousness reminds us of the parable taught by Jesus in Luke 18. This chapter in Habakkuk held great meaning to early believers, and continues to hold meaning for us today. Other popular verses are Habakkuk 2:14, “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea,” and Habakkuk 2:20, “The LORD is in his holy temple let all the earth be silent before him.” This chapter contains verses that are well known to many, and quoted often, such as Habakkuk 2:4 itself. How Can the Just (or Righteous) Live by Faith? Rather, it is for us to live by faith that God is righteous, holy, and that his actions in our lives, no matter how fair or unfair they may seem, do not change the fact of who he is and that he is ultimately perfect and good. It is not our place to decide whether we are good or bad in his sight. In Habakkuk we see God saying that it is not our place to decide what God should or should not do. As long as we feel we are doing better than that other person, then we are okay and God surely will not punish us. The point is that we can quickly become self-righteous by judging ourselves not by the righteousness of God, but by the actions of others. ![]() ![]() No matter how unrighteous or unfaithful Judah had become, what could justify this? Why would God allow this? They will argue that Babylon is a nation “who piles up stolen goods” ( v.6), “plundered many nations” ( v.8), “builds a city with bloodshed and establishes a town by injustice” ( v.12). Here, the Lord details that Judah will assume that it is unfair and illogical that a nation far worse than they are should conquer them. The majority of Habakkuk 2 consists of the Lord speaking to the prophet Habakkuk. It addresses the imminent future invasion of the Babylonian army, and the subsequent fall and exile of the Kingdom of Judah. ![]() The book of Habakkuk is unique in that it is written in a poetic fashion, and documents a conversation between Habakkuk and God. Yet the Bible clearly teaches that we are not to seek attention, applause, or anything that might puff us up, but rather we are to live by faithfulness to God and one another. It is an easy trap to fall into, and we are all just a social post away from it ourselves. We are trying to prove that we are right, and others are not. It’s almost as if we are looking for ways to have our viewpoint justified and supported by others through tearing down someone else. It is unfortunate for many reasons, but primarily because it tends to come from a place of being “puffed up,” and a desire to publicly tear down instead of privately build up. HandBrake's creators added this security measure after hackers broke into their servers in 2017, briefly replacing the real app with a bogus version that installed malware on unfortunate users' computers. But before you open the downloaded file, make sure you validate its checksum. Visit HandBrake's site to download a copy. Even if HEVC's not an option, you'll still get great-looking results, and much smaller files, with H.264 compression. On an aging 2012 Mac mini, I still got compression speeds between 0.25x and 0.33x real time. Good news for folks with older hardware: You can still use VideoToolbox for H.264. HEVC, VideoToolbox, 4000kbps: 0.4x real time, 205.6 MB.But on average, my tests found that constant-quality HEVC ran about 35% smaller than equivalent H.264.) HEVC, constant quality software encoding: 1.6x real time, 50.3MB (… no, that's not a typo.H.264, constant quality software encoding: 1x real time, 239.5MB.Remember, those speeds will vary based on your own hardware – I used a 2017 5K iMac – but the numbers below can give you a rough idea of what to expect: Here's a quick comparison of approximate file sizes using different compression methods, plus encode times relative to the actual length of the original clip. (As I write this, it's not clear whether that limitation comes from the chips themselves, or the software talking to them.) You can also use average bitrate when compressing with software, but given the massive speed boost you get from VideoToolbox, that's not nearly as tempting an option. ![]() VideoToolbox's hardware-accelerated compression is a whole lot faster, ranging from "impressively" for HEVC to "insanely" for H.264, but it can only use average bitrate. Thus, if you want the smallest possible file size with HEVC, you'll have to wait a looooong time, unless you're rocking one of Apple's tricked-out, professional-grade, cost-of-a-small-car high-end Macs. At the same general quality, HEVC produces smaller files than H.264.įor constant-quality encoding, Handbrake can't use hardware acceleration, so it's stuck doing the math in software. ![]() Basically, the higher the bitrate, the better your video looks, and the bigger the resulting file is.Īt the same bitrate and file size, HEVC looks better than H.264. This results in smaller final file sizes - but while it looked pretty good to my untrained eye, the resulting picture quality might not match that of your second option.Īverage bitrate keeps the amount of compression within a much smaller range, hovering around a target you set. Then it adjusts how much compression it applies scene-by-scene to hit that quality mark. Constant quality asks you how close to the original, uncompressed file you want the compressed version to look. To make a very, very long story short, you have two options when compressing a video with H.264 or HEVC. (Big thanks to transcoding wizard Don Melton for his expertise on this next part.) HandBrake 1.2.0 and later enables Apple's VideoToolbox technology to dramatically speed up H.264 (and, for users of post-2017 Macs, HEVC) encoding … but there's a slight catch. Again, the trade-off here boils down fairly simply: a longer wait for smaller files, or a much shorter wait for somewhat larger ones. Once you've picked an algorithm, you need to decide how you're going to apply it to your video. They're generally considered comparable in quality to H.264 and HEVC, respectively. (Note that on some newer, faster computers, HandBrake will also offer Google's VP8 and VP9 encoders. And both held up no matter what I threw at them, from animated movies to black-and-white classics to films with lots of fast action and bright colors. In my tests, both H.264 and HEVC looked remarkably close to the original, even on a big TV screen. Older Macs can play HEVC files just fine, but only the newest models have chips fast enough to encode HEVC decently. ![]() If you don't have a Mac made from 2017 onward, stick with H.264. H.265 or HEVC makes files even smaller - but requires hefty processing power to crunch the necessary numbers. Tried-and-true H.264 converts relatively quickly, and it can squeeze a high-def Blu-ray file onto a DVD's worth of space or less. The first two aren't worth considering with the latter two available. HandBrake offers a choice of four compression algorithms: MPEG-2 (oldest, relatively lousy), MPEG-4 (still old, not great), H.264 (old, faster, pretty good), and HEVC/H.265 (new, slower, even better). HEVC: Which compression algorithm is best? ![]() That made the preview a non-starter for a lot of modern productivity software for Windows, which had long assumed that current PCs used 64-bit processors and the corresponding version of Windows. After installing the preview of the ARM64 Windows 10, you could run 32-bit Intel and ARM apps 64-bit ARM apps but not 64-bit Intel apps. When the preview version of what became Parallels 17 was released last spring, it brought both promise and frustration. I tried to get id Software’s “Doom Eternal” to run on both Intel and M1 systems, and it crashed on startup both times. You’re better off with 2D games, and many games that require additional graphics software just won’t run. Microsoft has suspended that for now, but Parallels includes a virtual TPM 2.0 chip if necessary.Īnd while no serious gamer is going to consider using Parallels to run state-of-the-art titles, this version does include an improved graphics driver and better performance for Microsoft’s DirectX. It runs the Windows 11 Preview just as well as Windows 10, and those who set up that virtual machine won’t have to worry about the need for a TPM 2.0 chip that was originally part of the requirements. The Intel version can run literally dozens of different virtual machines – 10 versions of Windows and Windows Server, as well as Boot Camp 11 versions of macOS, including the upcoming macOS 12 Montery and eight distros of Linux officially, though a Parallels spokesperson told me that it will run four more unofficially. Even Windows 10 and 11 Preview boot times are snappy, certainly faster than booting up a real Windows PC. From a cold start, in which the app must launch as well as the virtual machine, it’s about double that to resume, but that’s still pretty impressive. On my Intel iMac, Parallels 17 gets very close to instantaneous suspend and resume times, with three seconds to suspend and just two seconds to resume, when Parallels is running. ![]() It works so well, you can even suspend the guest operating system while it’s doing something as critical as applying a software update without doing harm. ![]() When they need to work on it again, they just resume it, and the virtual machine wakes up in the same state as before. That’s true on the Intel side for Parallels 17, though I’d have to say that version 16 was pretty damned zippy. With each annual release, Parallels is touted as being faster than the previous year’s version. ![]() Gold/Weaver sacrifices himself by removing his heart and giving it to the dying Colin O'Donoghue Rumpelstiltskin is erased from existence following this.
